How to apply for funding to provide teaching internships during summer 2023 and 2024 to potential teachers in chemistry, computing, languages, maths and physics.
School partnerships can now apply for funding to provide teaching internships for summer 2023 and 2024.
Applications close on Monday, 7 November 2022.
To apply, you must be registered on Jaggaer, our e-tendering portal. You’ll then be able to view opportunities and search for the teaching internships programme.
Grants are available for school-led partnerships to design and provide teaching internships targeted at undergraduates studying for a degree in STEM-related subjects and languages.
The aim of the internship programme is to enable undergraduates the opportunity to experience teaching before they commit to it as a career. This programme is part of Get into Teaching, supporting prospective teachers through their journey into the profession.
We encourage you to work with your local schools to submit an application, with one lead school responsible for the administration and grant relationship with the Department for Education (DfE).
We’ll inform applicants of the outcome of their application no later than the week commencing 12 December 2022.
Undergraduates studying for a degree in STEM-related subjects and languages can apply to experience teaching in the following subjects:
We do not provide funding for subjects that are not listed.
The programme is school-led. Only school-led partnerships can apply for funding. School partnerships can choose to collaborate with an accredited initial teacher training (ITT) provider to develop and deliver their programme.
The partnership lead school should submit the application as they’ll have overall responsibility for the budget. However, they can choose to work in collaboration with partners to develop the proposal.
Whilst school-led partnerships across England can apply, we especially welcome applications from schools whose reach covers geographic areas where there have previously been gaps in provision. This includes:
Applications must be for a minimum of 5 participants across the subjects. There will be an opportunity to revise places requested later in the programme based on local capacity or need.
The programme should offer interns a structure of activities to gain a deep experience of teaching. This may include:

You should encourage all interns to access additional support from Get into Teaching, including teacher training advisers.
Internships will typically take place towards the end of each academic year around June and July. They should last for 3 weeks.
School partnerships are expected to start recruiting interns from January 2023. We’ll provide successful school partnerships with standard application forms before January. This will include the minimum level of information required from each applicant and Get into Teaching branding.
All successful schools can advertise their programme on the Get into Teaching teaching internships page.
For the minimum cohort size of 5 interns the grant funding would be a maximum of £8,300 per year.
The funding is for £1,600 overall for each intern completing a 3-week internship. Of this £1,600:
Additional funding of £300 per school (not per intern) is available for support to interns after the programme is complete. As part of the grant application process, you’ll bid for up to £300 to provide this support.
Funding will be paid through a grant funding agreement which will need to be agreed and signed by all successful applicants.
The funding does not cover costs or expenses incurred in preparing your application.
The grant funding will be provided on the strict understanding that none of the funding will be used for:
If successful, you’ll be awarded a 2-year grant funding agreement to provide an internship programme for 3 weeks in 2023 and 2024.
Funding for the 2023 programme will be provided between June 2023 and March 2024.
Funding for the 2024 programme will be provided between June 2024 and March 2025.
All successful applicants will need to submit a certificate of expenditure at the end of the grant cycle as an assurance of expenditure. This is outlined in annex G of the grant funding agreement.
Payments will be staged. They are subject to assurances that programmes are developed and recruitment is progressing.
To receive payment, successful applicants will need to submit documentation before the specific dates set out in the grant offer letter.
Successful applicants must also comply with all our participant data requests. This includes the retention of evidence confirming identities. Once we have confirmed you’re successful, we’ll tell you the standard data set of management information we’ll be collecting.
