Local schools depend on each other | News, Sports, Jobs – NUjournal

Oct 8, 2022
To the editor:
I am a strong supporter of New Ulm Area Catholic Schools, as a parent of students, coach, volunteer and alumna of NUACS. I am also a strong supporter of New Ulm Public Schools as a parent of a graduated student.
I recognized long ago that one school system within our community cannot stand alone. We’re interdependent on some levels to raise our academic achievements, broaden the courses we offer and create diverse extracurricular activities to round out our students’ experience and prepare them for their future. All our schools have the same overarching goal – provide the best support and opportunities to students so that they can achieve their career goals and contribute to their communities. Our young people are the pride of our community and the future leaders of this region.
I support the school referendum that will appear on the ballot Nov. 8, and ask my fellow community members and parochial school advocates to join me in voting YES. The referendum is a 0% tax increase. We are voting to renew a 10-year levy that is expiring this year, so essentially a YES vote will maintain our current commitment yet provide vital funding that helps improve our community’s school system.
The funds from the levy help lower class sizes, provide college prep classes and improve access to technology. NUACS and other parochial schools have access to New Ulm Public Schools programs, including athletics, Special Education services, nursing and counseling services and have access to classes at the high school and Career Technical Education Center (CTE).
A strong school system helps to define a strong community. Join me in voting YES on Nov. 8 for the school referendum.
