B.C. K-12 support workers reach tentative deal – Vancouver Sun

The tentative framework agreement covers approximately 40,000 school support workers across B.C.
About 40,000 unionized support staff in B.C.’s K-12 system have reached a tentative deal with their public school employer.

B.C.’s finance ministry said a provincial tentative framework agreement has been reached between the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association and the K-12 Presidents’ Council.

Paul Simpson, president of the K-12 Presidents’ Council, said the agreement recognizes the vital role its members provide.

“Our bargaining committees worked hard to reach this tentative agreement,” he said in a statement issued Friday.

Details of the three-year provincial framework agreement will not be made public until it is presented to members, said the council. Once approved, the deal will form a base for negotiations between local unions and respective school districts.

The council represents approximately 40,000 school support workers — including education assistants, secretaries, custodians, trades, maintenance, IT workers and Indigenous support workers — in 57 Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) locals in the K-12 system.
