Vermont Business Magazine Burlington School District (BSD) is proud to announce a BHS/BTC 2025 Fundraising Partnership with Burlington Students Foundation (BSF). The partnership with the 501(c)3 will allow the District to solicit private, tax-deductible donations from the public. The partnership will also help the District apply for grants and funding awards that may not have been previously available to the school district.
“This is an exciting piece of the funding puzzle to have in place,” said Superintendent Flanagan. “We’ve worked hard to find ways to keep the burden of this project off of taxpayers, and this partnership provides us even more opportunity to raise money and support this project.”
“The Burlington Students Foundation has long supported opportunities for Burlington children and we are thrilled to keep that legacy moving forward,” said BSF President, Michelle Clark. “Even though we know our high school and technical center students are learning well and achieving in their temporary spaces, we know that those spaces are just that: temporary. Burlington students, and our community, deserve permanent, 21st-century learning spaces that support deep learning, are built for current and expanding technologies, and connect students with their community and environment. The BHS/BTC 2025 project will do all of these things and we are proud to help play a part in making it a reality. ”
On August 15, Burlington City Council unanimously voted to place a $165 million bond on the November ballot to support the construction of a new high school and technical center. Flanagan said he hopes to raise more than $200,000 in private donations through the partnership and through avenues such as naming rights, but that the big opportunity with the partnership lies in the ability to pursue grants that might not always be available for school districts. “The ability to work with a 501(c)3 to apply for and receive grants is where we hope to be able to start seeing a real impact in terms of bringing in funding for this project.”
In addition to this partnership, BSD has already successfully identified $35 million in current resources and funds to support this project. This includes allocating $10 million in ESSER funds, using strong fiscal management to identify $5 million in District budget savings and surplus funds, redirecting $10 million from the 2017 Capital Plan Bond to support the project, and utilizing a $10 million grant from Senator Leahy to house some BTC programs at an Aviation Education Center at the Burlington International Airport.
The District is also actively working with Leonine Public Affairs to identify state and federal funding sources to support environmental remediation and tech center education.
