Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson in Kyiv to meet Ukrainian authorities and show EU support – European Commission

Commissioner Johansson is today in Kyiv for an official visit to meet with Ukrainian authorities. The aim of the visit is to help assess the needs for people fleeing the war, as well as for those going back to Ukraine. 3.9 million Ukrainians have registered under the Temporary Protection Directive since the European Commission’s proposal was agreed on 4 March. The Commissioner will meet with beneficiaries of the temporary protection directive. Around 500,000 Ukrainian children have already been registered in school systems across the EU.  In view of the incoming winter and the start of the new school year, Commissioner Johansson will discuss with the Ukrainian authorities the status of enrolment in the EU school system. Exchanging on this important point is crucial to help both children already in the EU and back in Ukraine. A joint press point will be held and recorded, which will be available here. This will take place after a signing ceremony to mark Ukraine’s observer status in the European Migration Network, the EU network of migration and asylum experts who work together to provide objective, comparable policy-relevant information and knowledge on emerging issues relating to asylum and migration in Europe.
