Editorial Mission: As the Department’s primary publication, we aim to live up to the meaning of ha‘aheo — to cherish with pride — by bolstering and sustaining pride in public education and touting the successes happening across our system.

The Department released updates to its COVID-19 Health and Safety Guidance on Monday to incorporate the Department of Health (DOH) and CDC’s latest guidance for K-12 schools. Some of the significant updates include:

#PublicSchoolProud
We asked some special guests to complete the sentence below.
“Great things are happening in Hawai‘i public schools. My top priority this school year is to ______.”
Family Focus
Expect heavier traffic this week as 50,000 additional private school and college students head back to campuses. To help mitigate traffic delays, the Hawai‘i State Department of Transportation encourages drivers to:
» Ensure vehicles are well maintained to help avoid stalls or crashes.
» Plan routes before getting on the road. Utilize resources like goakamai.org, Google Maps, Apple Maps, Waze or local media outlets to help find the most efficient route and the amount of time needed to get to your destination.
» Be mindful of peak traffic times of 5–9 a.m. and 3–7 p.m.
» Consider alternative transportation modes like the bus or city bikes.
» Ensure safety is the top priority regardless of what time you need to be at a location.
